Demosthenes Put Rocks in His Mouth. Should You?

What does it mean to discipline one’s self?

It is an interesting relationship.

Few people confess that they need to be brighter or more full of common sense, but there are very few who don’t confess a need for greater self-discipline.

Demosthenes (a contemporary of Aristotle) is said to have practiced speaking with pebbles in his mouth and when out-of-breath from exercise in order to overcome his limitations as an orator.  He decided to discipline himself at a level higher than his desired goal in order to master his craft.

We can learn from this.  In our worship, meditation, and prayer we can also practice under conditions that are much more challenging than the ideal so that we can achieve our best for God.  Worship, meditate on God’s Word, and pray in all sorts of noisy, busy places.

Discipline yourself to be alone with God no matter how many people are around, and to be quiet before Him no matter the noise.

After all, that is where we need Him and He uses us most.  Isn’t it?

I continue to enjoy your teaching on spending time alone with God no matter what the size of the crowd, and to be quiet before Him no matter the noise. During this time I'm able to experience a peace that surpass all understanding and God can be heard clearly. Nights prayer walk in Zion were also effective spiritually to me. So PM thank you for letting God use you to affect all of us. You're greatly loved and appreciated. God bless you

I needed to read that. There are many times when life flies by at breakneck speed, in all kinds of noisy situations. I will have time with my creator no matter what! Well, gotta go. I’m looking for pebbles.
