The New Gold

Would you be surprised to learn that there are greater motivators than money and prestige? Studies show that deeper motivation comes from the desire for autonomy, mastery, and purpose. I could dedicate a blog to this or you could check out Daniel Pink and learn so much more.

Jesus understood the power of these motivational tools.

When He called His disciples He didn’t say, “I’m gonna’ make you rich and get you that cushy corner office you’ve been coveting.”   He said, “I will make you fishers of men.”  And then He released them (gave them autonomy) to work from the  framework of His message of reconciliation and the Great Commandment and the Great Commission, utilizing their strengths, personalities and talents, empowered by His example and by the Holy Spirit (pursuing mastery) to “turn the world upside down (achieving purpose).”

Paul didn’t achieve his status because he wanted to be a big honcho in the church.  In fact, his transformation initially cost him a great deal of influence.  Even the new church leaders rejected him; he needed Barnabas just to get his foot in the door.

He understood the value of his call and gave his all in exchange for a God’s purpose, ministering with conviction and striving to master the work to which he was called. The rest, as they say, is history.

Scripture is full of men and women who abandoned a secure cause or office to pursue something that gave them autonomy to exercise their gifts within the framework set by Christ, and the opportunity to master their talents through scripture and Godly counsel, all while serving a purpose and vision larger than themselves.

We stand to gain the most because our purpose is so great.

Aren’t you glad we serve a Creator Who has such confidence in us?

*From Daniel Pink‘s, “DRIVE

Autonomy:  People want to have control over their work.

Mastery:  People want to get better at what they do.

Purpose:  People want to be part of something that is bigger than they are.
